Actually that is a fact.

A few things your going to want to consider when you get to building that computer is the warranty on your hardware. Especially the more expensive components! Not all video-cards are made equal, and you will find some have very good warranties and others will expire before you have ever put it in the box (like mine did) either way though, you're really going to want to do your research. Hopefully by the time you put together your computer the DDR2 - DDR3 thing will be resolved. Either way, have fun. And beware the static charge.

[I'm in the middle of piecing a system together myself, so best of luck ^_^]

Building computers isn't that difficult, just be careful with the equipment and make sure everything is plugged in etc and you'll be fine. It's the way to go if you want to save more money and want more customization, just do research to see if everything is compatible. When I built my computer it would start up but there would be nothing on the monitor, thought it was that or my video card. Turns out it was one of those connectors from the motherboard, so I unplugged it and suddenly it came to life

Well it depends heavily upon what exactly you want to do with this computer. If you want it to be a gaming computer, your going to have to buy Vista for the DirectX 10 stuff your going to need to get the most out of your video card. As far as the temporary operating system until you get it set up ... I'm always partial to a Linux/Microsoft duel boot, but yeah your probably going to want to use XP.

Also as far as the Power Supply, what exactly do you plan on running? If your going to have 4 hard-drives a couple optical drives and 2 videocards, your going to need some serious power. But I'm running a videocard, board, 3 hard-drives, and 1 optical-drive ( and 6 fans o_O) all on a 550watt powersupply. Now your going to need to make sure it has all the proper plugs for your motherboard, but still, your not going to need one of the massive powersupplys for a quad-SLI system ^_^ that would save you about $100 right there.

Towers are a very tricky pick. Depending upon where your computer is going to be [on the ground, on a desk, next to a wall, or sitting under your books] will be the main influence on how much cooling airflow can do. Unless you want to invest into water-cooling or some such alternative, but those aren't exactly budget friendly. A good all-around case is a front to back ventilation pattern is probably what your looking for. http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=15900 is my current favorite, but it's a tad bit pricey. And more than a little noisy when it's on. (You'll need to decide if noise is a factor too) A good case will come with all the fans in it, which is usually also a sign of a good case. But it is possible to get a case and add fan slots, it will make your case look very weird though.

Monitors are actually a tough deal. I recommend you do a lot of looking into it before you pick one. I totally lucked out and got a great one as they were getting rid of their display model, but yeah. Monitors are expensive (like "my food money for 3 months" expensive) but if you know what your looking for and are willing to wait, ... you'll get a good enough deal. [It has something to do with creating realistic expectations and the "HA it's on sale!" combination I'm sure]

-------------------------

Best of Luck. Oh, and anyone looking for an ultra portable laptop will want to look at this thing! ~~~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmH05vIN8N0 ... if I had the money I would totally buy it. It's only something like $350 for a laptop! Also, a Solid State Hard drive, is more reliable than a standard one, and is significantly faster. But they cost a fortune for a bigger one.

Also, don't buy the latest and greatest, prices will drop for the more midrange and what once was top class stuff. I like flat panel LCD monitors because they allow more space and don't heat up like CRT monitors as badly.
